Instagram is continuously exploring new ways to enhance private engagement on its platform. One of the latest options being tested is called “Blend”. This feature essentially combines a Reels feed based on the Reels that users have shared with a friend or connection. The idea behind Blend is to create a more personalized experience for users by showcasing Reels recommendations that are aligned with their shared interests and activities.

Instagram’s decision to introduce Blend is reflective of the increasing trend of private sharing on the platform. According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, users are now more inclined to share content through stories and direct messages (DMs) rather than just through their Feed. This shift in user behavior has prompted Instagram to develop new features that cater to private sharing, such as Blend.

In addition to Blend, Instagram has rolled out several other features aimed at fostering private engagement on the app. Inbox Notes is one such feature that prompts conversations by highlighting chat prompts from connections in the DM inbox. Channels offer a one-to-many messaging option targeted at celebrities and creators seeking to connect with their fans via DMs. Collections enable users to collaborate and engage around selected posts in a group feed. Moreover, Instagram now allows users to share feed posts exclusively with their Close Friends.

Blend appears to be a strategic move by Instagram to tap into the user behavior of content aggregation and sharing. With more users sharing memes and clips with friends either through DMs or in person, Blend could serve as a more focused and engaging way to curate content. By making content discovery a collective experience, Blend could enhance the overall user experience on the platform. However, the success of Blend ultimately depends on user adoption and engagement.

Instagram’s ongoing efforts to introduce new private engagement features like Blend demonstrate the platform’s commitment to evolving with changing user preferences.
