8BitDo has recently released a new addition to its Retro Mechanical Keyboard series, drawing inspiration from the iconic design of the Commodore 64. The keyboard is now available for preorder at $109.99, with shipping expected to start on May 26th.

The 8BitDo Commodore 64 edition features chunky brown keycaps made of ABS plastic with double-shot legends, giving it a retro look reminiscent of the 1980s computer era. The keyboard comes equipped with clicky Kailh Box White V2 switches, but users have the option to swap them out for quieter alternatives in the future. It offers multiple connectivity options including USB, Bluetooth, and a 2.4GHz USB dongle. Additionally, there is a built-in volume dial located at the top left of the keyboard for convenience.

One of the standout features of the keyboard is the return of the programmable “Super Buttons,” designed to resemble the A and B buttons of the Nintendo Entertainment System controller. This time, they are accompanied by a small joystick called the “Super Stick.” These accessories can be connected to the keyboard through 3.5mm jacks, offering users additional customization options.

The keyboard follows a tenkeyless layout, omitting the numpad while maintaining a traditional design. Unlike many modern mechanical keyboards, the 8BitDo Commodore 64 edition does not include RGB lighting, opting for a more classic appearance. Interestingly, the original Commodore 64 used Mitsumi hybrid switches, combining the tactile feel of mechanical switches with the softness of rubber domes.

For a closer look at the original Commodore 64C, Retro keyboard YouTuber Chyrosran22 has conducted a detailed review, providing insights into the construction and functionality of the device. The new 8BitDo Commodore 64 edition pays homage to this classic computer while incorporating modern features for a blend of nostalgia and performance.

Overall, the 8BitDo Commodore 64 edition Retro Mechanical Keyboard offers a unique blend of retro design and modern functionality, catering to enthusiasts of vintage computing. With its customizable switches, programmable buttons, and compact form factor, it appeals to users seeking a nostalgic typing experience with a touch of modern convenience.
