WhatsApp has recently introduced a new feature aimed at enhancing the safety of its group messaging functionality. This update is specifically targeted at providing users with more context and control when they are added to a group by an unknown user. The intention behind this feature is to empower users with the necessary information to make informed decisions about their participation in these groups.
The new feature presents users with a context card whenever they are added to a group by someone not in their contact list. This card serves as a source of information, displaying details about the group itself and the individuals who added them. By including the name of the user who added them, along with the creator of the group, users can have better clarity regarding the origins and purpose of the group.
In addition to providing context, the context card also equips users with the option to take necessary actions. If a user finds themselves in a group that they wish to exit, they can do so conveniently through the Exit Group button provided on the card. Furthermore, for cases where users encounter problematic content within the group, they are given the option to report such issues through the Safety Tools feature.
The update, which is being rolled out globally, aims to offer users a more secure and user-friendly group messaging experience. Notably, WhatsApp had previously introduced privacy settings that allowed users to control who can add them to groups. By enabling this setting, users would receive invitations to join groups rather than being directly added by unknown individuals, giving them the freedom to choose their group memberships.
Another aspect of the privacy settings includes a time limit for group invitations. Once a user is invited to a group, they have a set period of three days to accept the invitation before it expires. This feature adds an extra layer of control for users, ensuring that they have the final say in their group participations.
