WhatsApp is reportedly in the works of developing a new artificial intelligence feature that will enable users to engage in hands-free verbal conversations with Meta AI, an AI chatbot integrated into the app. Initially, it was rumored that users would only be able to send voice notes to Meta AI for one-way communication. However, new information suggests that the AI chatbot will also respond verbally, enhancing the user experience even further.

Meta AI Voice Mode Feature

According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the voice mode feature for Meta AI has been identified in the WhatsApp beta versions for both Android and iOS. A notable detail mentioned in the report is the presence of a new voice icon, represented by an audio waveform, located next to the text field in the Meta AI chat interface. Upon tapping on the icon, a bottom sheet with Meta AI written on top is revealed. In the middle, a circular shape created by multiple bubbles is displayed, while at the bottom, the text “Hi, how can I help” is accompanied by an expanded audio waveform icon, indicating that the AI is actively listening.

Voice Options and Transcriptions

The voice mode feature for Meta AI may offer users up to 10 different voices to choose from, as disclosed in additional screenshots. While the specific differences between these voice options remain unclear, they could potentially vary in accents, energy levels, or tonalities. It is unlikely that the voices will support multiple languages, focusing primarily on enhancing the conversational experience in the user’s preferred language. Additionally, users may have the option to enable captions and transcriptions using text-to-speech technology, which would document the entire verbal interaction and convert it into written text for future reference.

As of now, the Meta AI voice mode feature is not yet visible in the beta versions of the WhatsApp app, indicating that the development process is still ongoing. Consequently, users enrolled in the Google Play Beta program may not have immediate access to test the feature. While the exact timeline for the rollout of this feature to the public remains undisclosed, it is a promising development that could revolutionize the way users interact with AI chatbots on the platform.
