Boeing’s newly appointed CEO, Kelly Ortberg, expressed his desire to “reset” relations with a crucial union representing tens of thousands of the company’s workers as negotiations for a new labor contract continue. After taking office just a week ago, Ortberg met with the presidents of IAM 751 & W24 in Seattle for what he described as a productive conversation and an opportunity to listen to their concerns.

In a message shared with Boeing’s 170,000-plus employees, Ortberg outlined his commitment to resetting the relationship with the union and working towards a new contract that would benefit both parties. He emphasized the importance of building a strong future for the employees in the region, highlighting that the contract negotiations were in the “final phase.”

The two local branches of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, representing approximately 33,000 Boeing employees, are based in the Seattle area where the company’s 737 and 777 aircraft factories are located. With the current agreement set to expire soon, union members have authorized the possibility of strike action if a new contract is not reached by the deadline.

Path Forward

The IAM District 751 negotiating committee acknowledged Ortberg’s willingness to work towards a better future, stating that while the past cannot be rewritten, efforts can be made to move forward. The committee emphasized the importance of Boeing committing to securing jobs in the region and meeting the demands put forth by the union, including manufacturing the next aircraft in the area and offering a substantial pay increase and improved benefits.
