Typing on a television has long been a cumbersome experience that frustrates even the most patient users. At CES 2025, Direction9 introduced a novel solution by reviving an old typing method—T9. Originally designed for early mobile phones with limited keypads, T9 organizes letters in a three-by-three grid format. Each number corresponds to multiple letters, offering a familiar structure to those who remember it. This design utilizes the directional pad commonly found on many smart TV remotes, bridging the gap between the past and the digital demands of today’s users.
When initiating the keyboard interface, the cursor begins at the center of this grid, allowing users a simple yet effective means of navigating through letters. The first click selects a letter, while a subsequent click returns the cursor to the center, minimizing the distance one’s thumb has to travel. This effectively reduces the time and effort required to spell out words, making it more efficient for typing than standard layouts.
One of the standout features of Direction9’s keyboard is its predictive text functionality, which is designed to streamline the typing experience further. The user can select a few letters—such as pressing “abc” followed by “def”—and the software will attempt to anticipate the intended word. While this can significantly speed up the input process for common terms, the system does face challenges with more complex or less common words.
In testing the Direction9 interface firsthand, I found that it took little time to adapt. Within mere seconds, I was typing with reasonable efficiency. The layout, although initially disconcerting, quickly became intuitive. However, the predictive aspect showed limitations when attempting to spell more advanced vocabulary. While straightforward words were easily recognized, the system’s predictive capabilities faltered with terms that require more nuanced recognition.
Though the concept appears convoluted at first glance, the actual experience is surprisingly straightforward. Users who are accustomed to traditional input methods may find the learning curve a tad steep, but with a bit of practice, the layout proves to be beneficial. Notably, the satisfaction of typing faster than usual—even on a TV—proves to be an enticing incentive for users who often dread the process.
Direction9’s CEO, Leon Chang, notes the importance of user feedback in further developing this technology. As talks with content providers and streaming services progress, it is crucial that Direction9 refine their system to meet consumer needs seamlessly.
As television technology continues to advance, the need for efficient input methods on both smart TVs and streaming interfaces will only become more pressing.
