AltStore PAL, a third-party iOS app store, has recently made its debut in the European Union after Apple’s compliance with the region’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This new app marketplace, developed by Riley Testut and Shane Gill, offers users a unique alternative to Apple’s App Store.

Despite some challenges with Apple’s scare sheets, AltStore PAL eventually installs after some persistence and multiple clicks. This process may be cumbersome, but it allows users access to apps outside of Apple’s ecosystem, such as Delta and Clip.

Delta, an emulator capable of playing various games from classic consoles, and Clip, a clipboard manager, are the first apps available on AltStore PAL. While Delta is also launching on Apple’s App Store for users outside of Europe, Clip requires a minimum monthly Patreon pledge for download.

AltStore PAL integrates with Patreon for monetization and supports developers who wish to distribute beta apps as a reward for crowd-funded projects. This approach provides an alternative to Apple’s restrictions on certain app distribution methods.

AltStore PAL’s approval under the DMA ensures that Delta and Clip have a legitimate launch, with Apple’s notarization. This move signifies a shift in Apple’s stance on apps like emulators and background-running software, showcasing the potential for developers to explore new avenues.

Testut welcomes submissions from third-party developers on AltStore PAL, offering a decentralized approach to app hosting. Unlike Apple’s centralized App Store, developers can self-host their apps on their servers, providing users with a variety of software options.

AltStore PAL’s entry into the iOS app market represents a significant step towards diversifying app distribution and exploring new possibilities for developers and users. While there may be challenges in the installation process and compliance with Apple’s regulations, the platform offers a promising alternative for those seeking unique and innovative apps.
