AMD recently announced that the launch of its new Zen 5 processors, including the Ryzen 9 9950X, would be delayed by one to two weeks. This decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” according to spokesperson Stacy MacDiarmid. The Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will now be launched on August 8th, while the Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will go on sale on August 15th.
The delay in the launch of these processors was due to quality concerns. AMD found that some of the initial production units shipped to channel partners did not meet the company’s full quality expectations. In order to ensure the highest quality experience for users, AMD decided to replace these initial production units with fresh ones.
In a statement, AMD’s SVP Jack Huynh expressed the company’s commitment to providing a high-quality experience for every Ryzen user. The decision to delay the launch was made in order to maintain this commitment and to ensure that users have a great experience with the new Ryzen 9000 series processors.
The decision to delay the launch of the Zen 5 processors comes at a time when AMD is being cautious in light of Intel’s recent issues with its 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Intel has been dealing with instability issues in its Core i9-13900K and i9-14900K processors, and a patch to fix the problem won’t be available until August. These crashing Intel chips have been permanently degraded, leading to the need for them to be returned to Intel.
In addition to the desktop processors, AMD is also set to launch its Zen 5 laptop chips, codenamed Strix Point and formally known as Ryzen AI 9 300. A new higher-end chip in this lineup, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 375, with a more powerful 55 TOPS NPU, has been revealed by AMD.
