Electric bikes have been gaining popularity as a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation. The Engwe P20, priced at around $1,190, promises a lot on paper. However, the real-life performance may not always live up to the expectations. It is important to consider whether the price justifies the features and functionality of the e-bike.

One of the main issues with the Engwe P20 is the tuning of the torque sensor. The delay in pedal assist can be frustrating, especially when starting on an incline. The single-speed bike configuration limits the rider’s ability to adjust for a smoother ride. This becomes apparent when trying to navigate hilly terrain, as the motor’s capabilities may fall short of expectations.

Another drawback of the Engwe P20 is its speed limitations. The maximum speed of 25km/h (15.5mph), as per European regulations, may not be sufficient for some riders. Unlocking the motor for higher speeds can result in discomfort for the rider, especially at US speeds of 20mph (32km/h). The throttle lever, although present, also suffers from delays in engagement, making the riding experience less than ideal.

Despite its performance issues, the Engwe P20 does offer some positive attributes. The hydraulic disc brakes provide efficient stopping power, and the overall geometry of the bike offers a stable and secure ride. The battery life is decent, and the inclusion of integrated features such as fenders, lights, and a rear rack adds value to the package.

While the Engwe P20 has its merits, it falls short in terms of user experience and optimization. It feels more like a product assembled from existing parts rather than a thoughtfully designed e-bike. The lack of attention to detail in key areas such as the torque sensor tuning and throttle responsiveness detracts from the overall ride quality.

The Engwe P20 may be a suitable option for those on a budget or looking for a basic e-bike for short commutes. However, it may not be the ideal choice for riders seeking a more refined and optimized riding experience. The trade-off between price and performance should be carefully weighed before investing in an electric bike. Consider your riding needs and priorities to determine if the features offered by the Engwe P20 align with your expectations.
