Ubisoft has recently announced the upcoming release of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, a new addition to the long-standing turn-based strategy RPG series that dates back to 1984. The game promises to take players back to the world of Enroth and the origins of the legendary saga, offering both veterans and new players an opportunity to embark on a quest to Jadame, a mysterious continent in turmoil. This new installment is set to introduce new factions, biomes, and creatures while retaining classic features such as castle management, army clashes, and hex-based maps.
New Gameplay Features
In addition to the familiar elements of the series, Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era will also bring some exciting new features to the table. Players can look forward to a new solo campaign, the option to engage in one-off clashes on single maps, and a map generator that promises “limitless” scenarios. The game will offer co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, each with its own matchmaking system, ratings, and leaderboards. Furthermore, there will be a map and campaign editor for creative players to craft their own scenarios and challenges.
Revamped Visuals and Enhanced AI
One of the most notable updates in Olden Era is its revamped visual style, which aims to capture the vibrant and magical essence of the series’ beginnings. The AI has also undergone significant improvements, providing players with more challenging and engaging gameplay experiences. Difficulty settings have been tailored to accommodate both seasoned veterans of Might & Magic games and newcomers alike.
The game will introduce new gameplay mechanics, including active abilities for heroes and creatures, as well as a faction-based perk system known as Faction Laws. The currently revealed factions include the Knights of Temple, Necropolis, Sylvan, Dungeon, and Hive, with one more faction yet to be unveiled. The Hive faction, described as the “big bads” of this iteration, presents a formidable challenge for players as they navigate the complex alliances and conflicts on Jadame.
Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era will be the first game in the series to launch through early access. Developed by Unfrozen on the Unity engine, the team behind Iratus: Lord of the Dead, the game is poised to deliver a fresh and immersive experience for fans of the franchise. With its combination of classic elements and innovative features, Olden Era looks set to usher in a new era for the Heroes of Might & Magic series.
Reflecting on “Olden Era”
As we anticipate the release of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, it’s worth noting the tongue-in-cheek nod to the past with the title “Olden Era”. While some may find it amusing, the choice of the word “olden” over “old” adds a touch of whimsy and nostalgia to the game’s branding. In a world where language evolves and adapts, it’s refreshing to see developers embrace archaic terms to infuse their game with character and charm. Perhaps “olden” will become the latest buzzword for a generation looking to add a touch of refinement to their age.
