Instagram is currently experimenting with a new way for users to upload media on the platform. Company head Adam Mosseri recently shared details about this pilot test, which allows select users to upload photos and videos in a vertical grid format without the need to crop the content into a square. This development comes as Instagram makes changes to its platform, such as expanding the limit for media uploads in carousels and eliminating the need to split collections into multiple posts.

According to Mosseri, the square format for media uploads was a remnant of the past when Instagram only allowed users to post in that format. However, he noted that the majority of content uploaded on Instagram today is in a vertical aspect ratio, making the process of cropping it down to a square format challenging for users. This new experiment aims to address this issue and provide users with more flexibility in how they upload their content.

While the new vertical grid format may be beneficial for users who prefer uploading content in a vertical aspect ratio, it could also pose challenges for those who are accustomed to lining up their content in a square grid. Mosseri acknowledged this potential impact on users and expressed a desire to manage the transition effectively. Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai mentioned that they will be gathering feedback from the community before making any further changes to the platform.

The concept of vertical profile grids on Instagram was first introduced in 2022 by a tipster, Alessandro Paluzzi. Initially, the platform tested the feature with a small group of users, and now it appears that the test phase is expanding to a broader audience. While the availability of the feature has not been confirmed by all users, reports on social media indicate that some users have already started seeing the new profile grid format on their accounts.
