Recently, TikTok has introduced a new feature that allows users to share short, text-based “thoughts” on the app. These thoughts are then displayed in a speech bubble format on the Stories feed at the top of the user’s inbox. This new feature bears a striking resemblance to Instagram’s Notes option.
It seems like TikTok is essentially copying Instagram’s Notes feature, which has been popular among younger users. However, TikTok cannot use the same name “Notes” for this feature since they have already named a separate photo-sharing app Notes. Despite the slight differences in format and user interface, the focus on still images in this feature reflects Instagram’s influence and history. This move by TikTok might be seen as an attempt to encroach on Instagram’s territory.
Similarities between TikTok and Instagram
In recent times, TikTok and Instagram have become very similar in terms of their offerings. While different audiences may prefer one platform over the other, the content you see on both platforms is increasingly driven by AI recommendations. With video clips being the predominant content on both platforms, it’s hard to ignore the similarities between TikTok and Instagram. TikTok’s algorithm, however, is slightly more responsive to user interests.
Feature Replication
The trend of TikTok and Instagram copying each other’s features is nothing new. Feature replication has become almost expected from both platforms. Therefore, it’s not surprising to see TikTok incorporating Instagram’s Notes feature into its own user experience. Considering the success of this feature on Instagram, there’s a high possibility that it will also be well-received on TikTok.
Currently, TikTok is testing this new feature with a select group of users. It will be interesting to see how users respond to this new option and whether it will enhance the overall user experience on the platform. Despite the similarities between TikTok and Instagram, each platform still has its unique strengths and appeal to different audiences.
