Recently, Elon Musk announced a new strategy to increase subscriptions for X (formerly Twitter) by reintroducing the coveted blue checkmark for accounts with high follower counts. According to Musk, users with over 2,500 verified subscribers will receive X Premium for free, while those with over 5,000 verified accounts in their audience will be granted X Premium+ at no cost.

Musk’s decision to bring back the blue checkmark seems to stem from a desire to create a sense of exclusivity and value within the X community. By offering Premium features to accounts with high follower counts, Musk hopes to entice more users to subscribe to X and ultimately increase revenue for the platform. Additionally, Musk’s recent introduction of Grok, an AI chatbot available to all X Premium users, speaks to his larger goal of expanding X’s user base.

Despite Musk’s efforts, X has struggled to attract a significant number of subscribers to its Premium services. With estimates indicating that X Premium has fewer than a million subscribers out of 550 million total users, it is clear that Musk’s subscription revenue goals have yet to be realized. The introduction of Grok, while innovative, has failed to generate substantial interest among users, highlighting the need for X to rethink its approach towards increasing subscriptions.

Grok, developed by xAI, X Corp’s AI division, represents Musk’s foray into the world of artificial intelligence. However, the AI bot alone may not be enough to drive subscription growth for X. While Musk’s decision to offer advanced features such as Grok and full self-driving capabilities for free temporarily may generate hype, the long-term success of these initiatives remains uncertain. The challenge lies in convincing non-paying users to see the value in upgrading to X Premium and embracing the additional features it offers.

Elon Musk’s latest strategy to boost X subscriptions through the reintroduction of the blue checkmark and offering Premium features to high follower accounts is a bold move aimed at reinvigorating the platform. However, the success of this strategy hinges on X’s ability to effectively communicate the value of its Premium services to users and drive subscription growth. As X continues to evolve and experiment with new features, Musk’s vision for the platform’s future remains a work in progress.
