Fallout 4, the popular open-world wasteland RPG released in 2015, is receiving a “next generation” update today. Timed to coincide with the rising popularity of the Fallout TV show, this update brings a host of new features and improvements to the game across various platforms.

Enhancements and Additions

The update includes support for widescreen and ultra-widescreen displays, fixes for the Creation Kit, and a range of quest updates. Additionally, new items for the Creation Club will be introduced, such as the Makeshift Weapon Pack and a new quest called Echoes Of The Past. The quest tasks players with preventing The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology in the Commonwealth.

Expansion to Epic Games Store

In addition to the existing platforms, Fallout 4 will now be available on the Epic Games Store. Furthermore, it has been upgraded to Steam Deck Verified status, ensuring compatibility with Valve’s handheld gaming device.

Mod Compatibility Concerns

Despite the excitement surrounding the update, there are concerns about its impact on existing Fallout 4 mods. The update may break compatibility with certain mods, leading to potential issues for mod enthusiasts. Developers like the team behind Fallout: London have delayed their release to assess the situation and ensure their mod remains functional.

According to Nexus Mod community manager Pickysaurus, the update is likely to be incompatible with the Fallout 4 Script Extender initially, affecting mods that rely on it. Advanced mods may require separate updates, and traditional mods created with the Creation Kit might need adjustments based on changes to the base game. It is advised to hold off on installing the update until the compatibility of your favorite mods is confirmed.

For those concerned about mod compatibility, the Nexus Mod community has provided a guide to disabling auto-updates for various versions of Fallout 4. They recommend obtaining the GOG edition of the game and using GOG Galaxy for easier switching between different versions.

While the update brings exciting new features to Fallout 4, some players, like myself, may not feel an urgent need to revisit the game. The Boston setting was underwhelming in my experience, and the story has not left a lasting impression. Instead, I have found myself drawn back to the original 1997 Fallout and am eager to explore more classic CRPGs in a similar vein.

The Fallout 4 “next generation” update offers a mix of enhancements and challenges for players and mod developers alike. As the community navigates the changes brought about by the update, it will be interesting to see how the game evolves and adapts to the new features introduced.
