The reboot of the classic horror game Alone in the Dark, developed by Pieces Interactive, has faced its fair share of challenges since its recent launch. Originally scheduled for release last year, the game was delayed multiple times, causing disruptions within the development team. The decision to push back the release was made to avoid competition with other games like Alan Wake 2, as well as to prevent overworking the developers. However, these delays did not bode well for the game’s reception upon its eventual release at the end of March.

The remake of the 1992 game aimed to breathe new life into the original storyline by featuring Stranger Things’ David Harbour and Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer as the main characters. The game’s narrative, rewritten by Mikael Hedberg, offered a fresh perspective on the haunted Derceto Manor, where players were tasked with searching for a missing uncle. Additionally, the gameplay was revamped to incorporate a more modern over-the-shoulder perspective, departing from the static camera angles of the original version.

Despite the efforts to modernize the game, Alone in the Dark received a mixed critical reception upon its release. Reviewers noted that while the game successfully expanded on the original scenario and characters, it fell short in terms of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat mechanics. With lukewarm reviews and tepid player reaction, Pieces Interactive now faces another setback in the form of layoffs.

Former QA analyst Helena Hansen took to social media to announce that she was among the employees who were let go by Pieces Interactive. She expressed sadness for herself and her colleagues, hinting at the emotional toll of the sudden job loss. While Hansen shared her experience, other affected employees are yet to come forward. Neither Pieces Interactive nor THQ Nordic, the game’s publisher, have officially confirmed the number of layoffs that occurred.

Pieces Interactive, owned by Embracer Group, has faced uncertainty in recent months due to restructuring efforts. CEO Lars Wingefors stated that the company’s restructuring, which began last summer, had finally concluded in March. However, the recent layoffs suggest that the fallout from the Alone in the Dark reboot may have lasting effects on the development team at Pieces Interactive.

The reboot of Alone in the Dark has not only faced challenges in its development and release but has now led to layoffs at Pieces Interactive. The game’s mixed reception and subsequent layoffs highlight the volatile nature of the gaming industry, where even established franchises can struggle to find success in the modern market.
