Recent data from corporate reputation tracking firm Caliber indicates that Tesla’s “consideration score” has dropped significantly, falling from a high of 70 percent in November 2021 to a mere 31 percent. This decline is alarming, especially when compared to the slight increase in consideration scores for rival EV manufacturers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes during the same period.

Public Perception of Elon Musk

A study conducted by analytics firm CivicScience revealed that 42 percent of US consumers have an unfavorable view of Elon Musk. This negative perception has only been exacerbated by Musk’s controversial behavior, including promoting conspiracy theories and making questionable decisions at companies like X (formerly known as Twitter).

Association of Tesla with Musk

Caliber reports that 83 percent of Americans surveyed associate Tesla with Elon Musk. This means that Musk’s actions and public persona directly impact Tesla’s brand reputation and consumer appeal. It is evident that Musk’s behavior is a significant contributing factor to the decline in Tesla’s reputation among consumers.

Brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance provided data showing a decline in Tesla’s reputation in various countries, including the US, UK, France, and Australia, between 2023 and 2024. This global trend further solidifies the notion that Elon Musk’s behavior is negatively affecting Tesla’s image and market position.

Tesla’s declining sales cannot be solely attributed to Elon Musk’s controversial behavior, as the company faces challenges such as manufacturing delays, shipping disruptions, and increased competition from rivals like Rivian and China’s BYD. However, it is clear that Musk’s actions are a contributing factor to the company’s struggles and could be deterring potential customers from choosing Tesla over competitors.

Elon Musk’s behavior is unquestionably impacting Tesla’s sales and reputation. As the face of the company, Musk’s actions reflect directly on the brand, and negative public perception of him can have serious consequences for Tesla’s future success. It is imperative for Musk to be mindful of his conduct and its effects on the company he leads in order to maintain and regain consumer trust and loyalty.
