These changes in word usage were unprecedented and did not have a common link to major world events, unlike previous trends observed during events like the Ebola outbreak in 2015 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the evolution of language can naturally influence word choice in writing, the researchers found that the sudden and significant increases in vocabulary usage were directly correlated with the introduction of LLMs. The study highlighted the importance of distinguishing between authentic human writing and text generated with LLM assistance. By identifying marker words that became more common in the post-LLM era, researchers were able to detect the telltale signs of LLM use in scientific writing.
