Lux, known for their popular Halide app among photographers, has now introduced Kino, a dedicated video capture app for iPhones. The focus of Kino is to provide pro-level features to support the needs of professionals in the industry.

Kino is specifically targeting the iPhone 15 Pro’s support for ProRes videos encoded in the Log format. This format is favored by videographers for its super flat color profile, which allows for more control over the final look of the video. The app is available in the App Store for an introductory price of $9.99 until Friday, after which it will cost $19.99.

One of the standout features of Kino is the “Instant Grade,” which enables users to shoot footage with grade presets. Additionally, users can record in Apple Log format within the app and preview or add the presets later. AutoMotion is another feature that automatically selects the best exposure settings for cinematic motion blur.

Kino also includes the ability to add Look Up Tables (LUTs), allowing users to alter the look of their footage using mathematical formulas. Furthermore, the app allows users to add custom LUTs, a feature that is notably missing from Apple’s Final Cut Pro iPad app. Developers assure users that none of their apps gather or collect data or analyze videos and photos, ensuring data privacy.

While Log support is a feature exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro, it is compatible with any device running iOS 17 or higher. This ensures that a wide range of users can benefit from the advanced features offered by Kino.

Lux’s Kino app is a promising addition to the world of video capture on iPhones. With its focus on providing professional-level features and support for advanced video formats, it is sure to attract the attention of videographers and content creators looking to elevate their video production capabilities. The convenience of shooting, grading, and customizing videos within one app makes Kino a valuable tool for those looking to create high-quality video content on the go.
