Instagram recently introduced a new feature called “limits,” which allows users to hide direct messages (DMs) and comments from accounts that may be harassing them. This feature goes beyond the previous options of hiding content from recent followers or non-followers, enabling users to mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list. The purpose of this feature is to help users deal with harassment campaigns and unwanted messages from bullies and other negative actors on the platform.

When a user sets limits on their interactions, they will only see DMs, tags, and mentions from people on their close friends list. Accounts that are not on the close friends list can still interact with the user’s posts, but these updates will not be visible to the user. Additionally, the accounts that have been limited will not be notified that their content has been hidden. Users have the option to choose whether they want to view or ignore limited comments and DMs. Limits can be set for up to four weeks initially, with the option to extend them if needed.

To enable the limits feature, users need to tap on their profile, select the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the screen, and choose “Limited interactions.” From there, they can toggle on limits for accounts that are not following them, recent followers, or everyone except their close friends. This gives users control over who can interact with them on the platform and enhances their overall experience by reducing unwanted noise.

In addition to the limits feature, Instagram has also made enhancements to the restrict feature. This feature not only hides comments from restricted users but also prevents them from tagging or mentioning the user. These enhancements provide users with more tools to protect themselves from unwanted interactions and create a safer online environment.

These new features come at a time when Instagram is facing increased scrutiny from the US government over the safety of its young users. Earlier this year, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, implemented new measures to prevent adults from messaging minors on Instagram and Facebook by default. Additionally, the company has taken steps to hide content related to suicide and eating disorders from teenage users on both platforms. These efforts demonstrate Instagram’s commitment to creating a safer and more secure platform for all users.

The new limits feature on Instagram is a valuable tool for combatting harassment and improving the overall user experience. By giving users control over who can interact with them and providing enhanced features for managing unwanted interactions, Instagram is taking steps to create a safer and more supportive community for its users.
