In recent years, the concept of commercial space flight has gained significant traction. Companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic have been instrumental in ferrying paying customers into space. However, as the demand for unique experiences continues to grow, new players are entering the market to provide tourists with an opportunity to view the Earth from a different perspective. Three startups, namely France-based Zephalto, Florida-based Space Perspective, and Arizona-based World View, are aiming to offer stratospheric balloon rides to visitors seeking a thrilling adventure.
The innovative approach taken by these startups involves using pressurized capsules and massive gas-filled balloons to transport tourists to the stratosphere. World View’s CEO, Ryan Hartman, emphasized that the capsule is designed to accommodate eight customers and two crew members. The interior of the capsule will feature a center bar for socializing and even a bathroom for added comfort during the journey. While the balloon rides will last for approximately 6 hours, passengers will not reach the official boundary of space. Instead, they will soar to heights ranging from 15 to 19 miles above the Earth’s surface, providing a unique perspective on our planet.
The debate over what constitutes space has been a topic of discussion among space tourism enthusiasts. While the U.S. government recognizes the start of space at roughly 80 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, Jane Poynter, co-CEO of Space Perspective, challenges this notion. According to Poynter, the absence of a universal definition of space allows for a more flexible interpretation. As passengers embark on these stratospheric balloon rides, they will experience sensations that are akin to being on an airplane, as opposed to the weightlessness associated with rocket-powered space tourism. Vincent Farret d’Astiès, founder and chief pilot at Zephalto, reassures potential customers that the physical requirements for boarding the balloon are minimal, making the experience accessible to a wider audience.
Despite the novelty of stratospheric balloon rides, consumer interest has been steadily increasing. World View, Space Perspective, and Zephalto have all reported positive reception from the public. World View has already sold 1,250 tickets, while Space Perspective has secured 1,800 bookings. Zephalto, though not disclosing specific numbers, has seen its initial flights sell out. Ticket prices vary across the different companies, ranging from $50,000 per seat with World View to approximately $184,000 with Zephalto. Space Perspective offers tickets at a price point of $125,000 per seat. However, the successful commercial launch of these services remains contingent upon meeting regulatory requirements and conducting crewed test flights at the intended altitude.
