The Russo brothers, known for their work on previous Marvel films, have officially signed on to direct two new Avengers films. The announcement was made during Marvel’s Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The first film, Avengers: Doomsday, is set to be released in May 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.
One of the most surprising revelations from the announcement was the inclusion of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU to portray the iconic villain. This unexpected pivot to Doctor Doom comes after setbacks for Marvel’s previously announced film, The Kang Dynasty.
The Kang Dynasty, which was originally set to premiere before the new Avengers films, faced numerous challenges. Director Destin Daniel Cretton and writer Michael Waldron both stepped down from the project. The film’s future became even more uncertain after actor Jonathan Majors was fired due to a domestic violence case, as he was set to play Kang in both the Loki series and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
