The Russo brothers, known for their work on previous Marvel films, have officially signed on to direct two new Avengers films. The announcement was made during Marvel’s Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The first film, Avengers: Doomsday, is set to be released in May 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.

One of the most surprising revelations from the announcement was the inclusion of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU to portray the iconic villain. This unexpected pivot to Doctor Doom comes after setbacks for Marvel’s previously announced film, The Kang Dynasty.

The Kang Dynasty, which was originally set to premiere before the new Avengers films, faced numerous challenges. Director Destin Daniel Cretton and writer Michael Waldron both stepped down from the project. The film’s future became even more uncertain after actor Jonathan Majors was fired due to a domestic violence case, as he was set to play Kang in both the Loki series and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The introduction of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday signifies a shift in Marvel’s storytelling. With the anticipated arrival of the Fantastic Four in the MCU, it appears that Marvel is planning to wrap up its Multiverse Saga in a grand fashion. The possibility of Doctor Doom orchestrating a major event, potentially tying back to Iron Man, adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming films.

The Russo brothers’ involvement in the new Avengers films brings a sense of excitement and anticipation among fans. The addition of Doctor Doom and the challenging journey of The Kang Dynasty showcase Marvel’s willingness to take risks and explore new narratives within the superhero genre. As the release dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars draw closer, the anticipation for these films continues to build, promising a thrilling and unpredictable cinematic experience for audiences.
