WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has recently expanded the rollout of its Meta AI chatbots in select markets, including India and the US. The platform is now reportedly working on a new feature called ‘Imagine Me’, which will allow users to generate AI-generated photos of themselves.
According to reports, this new feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp for Android beta release available through the Google Play Beta programme. Users may be required to upload a few reference selfies when opting into the feature, allowing the Meta AI chatbot to create new AI images based on the uploaded photos.
Users can request the AI image generation by typing “Imagine me” in the Meta AI chat window. Alternatively, they can access the feature in other chats by typing “@Meta AI imagine me”. The feature is expected to offer users the ability to choose different backgrounds and locations, such as from the forest to outer space, to create customised stickers.
According to WABetaInfo, users will have the option to delete the uploaded snaps at any time through their settings. The personalised AI image-generating feature is said to be optional, requiring users to manually turn it on in their settings. It is anticipated to be available in a future update.
Meta AI, WhatsApp’s ChatGPT competitor, has been gradually rolling out in various markets, with India being introduced to the chatbot last month. Powered by the in-house Llama 3 large language model (LLM), Meta AI is currently available on other Meta-owned platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
The development of the ‘Imagine Me’ feature on WhatsApp showcases the platform’s commitment to integrating advanced AI technologies to enhance user experience and personalisation. As the feature continues to be refined and tested, users can look forward to a new way of creating customised AI images and stickers within the messaging app.
